“Inside the Great Pyramid, I found the so-called three doors,” Hawass revealed. “There is one on the south entrance of the second chamber that has two copper handles. Twenty-one centimeters behind that one, we found a second one, and in the northern tunnel, we found the third door with two copper handles.”
Intrigued by these discoveries, Hawass led a team on a mission in December 2023 to further investigate the doors and the shafts they may be connected to. As he explained, the team’s goal was to “clean the south shaft from outside to learn if it does open to the outside.”
The shafts within the Great Pyramid have long been a subject of speculation and study. Hawass believes that if the south shaft is found to be an open entrance, it may have been used by the pharaoh as a symbolic entrance to the Netherworld.
Alternatively, if the shaft is sealed, it could provide clues to the Westcar Papyri, an ancient Egyptian text that mentions Khufu’s search for the writings of the deity Thoth to aid in the construction of the pyramid.
“Only further research into the shafts can reveal their function, solving one of the many mysteries of the Great Pyramid,” Hawass stated.
Hawass has dubbed this ongoing exploration the “Djedi Project,” named after the ancient Egyptian magician who was believed to have the power to enter the Afterlife. The initial study was completed in December 2023, and Hawass has indicated that further work will continue.
“We conducted a one-week study in December, and work will continue,” Hawass wrote on his Instagram feed, hinting at the potential for more groundbreaking discoveries.
While the Great Pyramid may appear to be a simple structure from the outside, its interior tells a much more complex story. Hawass has emphasized that historians and archaeologists find the Great Pyramid fascinating precisely because of its intricate and multilayered design.
